'Longwave' is a short film drama that tells the story of Louis, a young grieving man, who communicates with his father through a radio. Wanting to come-out to his father, Louis realises that he has to finally move on with his life and live in the present. I produced and co-wrote 'Longwave' as part of my Graduate film in 2017, taking particular interest in father-son relationships and how the loss of a father can uniquely effect young men.
LOGLINEA young, grieving man is shocked when his deceased father speaks to him through a radio, but finally realises he needs to move on and live his own life, after self-disclosing his sexuality.
SYNOPSISLouis, a sullen young man struggling to deal with the recent death of his father, is camping alone by a tranquil lake. This is a sentimental place where he and his deceased father shared many fond memories, camping and fishing upon the peaceful water. Under the glow of the campfire, suddenly a familiar song plays through Louis’s radio, nostalgically reminding him of his warm-natured father. During the day, Louis fishes and runs around the lake, just like he and his father used to; ignoring the continuous vibration of his phone. As the stars come out, the same song plays through the radio as the young man sits by the dancing flames of the fire. Listening contently, Louis hears the radio crackle, followed by a husky voice; “Hello?”. The confused man is ecstatic to hear his father’s comforting voice transmit through the speakers, and thrilled to converse with him once more. Every night, the sentimental tune replays on the radio, succeeded by his father’s warming voice. One evening under the moonlight, Louis feels the urge to tell his father about someone he’s recently met. As the words hang on the end of his tongue, Louis hastily turns off the radio. Frustrated, when Louis goes for a jog the next day, he breaks down and tears roll down his face. Come evening, Louis asks his father how he met his mother and introduced her to the family. Touched by his father’s memories, Louis proclaims that there is someone he wishes he could meet. All of a sudden, the radio crackles and falls to silence. In anger, the young man throws the radio across the forest floor, instantly regretting his foolish actions. Louis sits in his isolated tent through the cold night attempting to fix it, worrying he will never be able to speak to his father again. In the morning, Louis awakes with a fresh mind and picks up his phone. He reaches Adam’s voicemail and emotionally explains he loves him. Ready to return home and live his life, Louis begins to pack his stuff up. As he pours waters on to the dying flames, the radio crackles once more. Running over in desperation, Louis cradles the radio in his hands and listens to his father’s warm voice for one last time. His Dad tells the young man it’s alright, the words Louis has been yearning all this time. With a smile gleaming on his face, he turns the radio off and returns to his car. Louis’ phone rings, and he answers; “Adam”.
